Moose Mart is more than just a convenience store—it’s a cherished part of the Kemptville community, offering a wide variety of products and services that cater to everyday needs. Here’s a glimpse of what makes Moose Mart special:

  • Convenience Store Essentials: Moose Mart stocks a broad selection of items, from snacks and beverages to household essentials, ensuring you can always find what you need quickly.

  • Healthy Takeout Meals: Hungry? Moose Mart has you covered with delicious sandwiches, fresh cheese curd, and other quick bites.

  • Gifts: Whether you’re in need of a last-minute gift or something unique, Moose Mart offers a delightful selection. They’re especially proud of their selection of hot sauces and other customer-requested products.

Owner, Kevin Poulin, after spending over 20 years in the metal industry as a gold technician, considered opening a golf course. However, after recognizing the need for a convenience store on this side of the downtown, and receiving enthusiastic support from a community survey, he and his wife decided to build Moose Mart from the ground up. Thirteen years later, Moose Mart remains a beloved spot for locals in Kemptville.

Why the name Moose Mart?

But what’s the story behind the name “Moose Mart”? When Kevin married his wife, Sandy, she had a six-year-old daughter who loved Kevin as her second dad. To avoid confusion between her two dads, Kevin suggested they use special nicknames—she became “Baby Moose,” and he was “Papa Moose.” This charming bond inspired the store’s name, which has since become a well-known and catchy brand in the community.

While competing with large chains can be challenging, Kevin remains steadfast in his philosophy: “I’d rather keep it small, but fresh,” allowing customers to find their essentials quickly and conveniently, ensuring they get what they need without waiting in long lines.

However, locals agree that it’s Kevin’s connection with his customers that truly sets Moose Mart apart. He knows many by name and can often identify people when they arrive, just by their cars. He’s also known for preparing their favorite products ahead of time and even allowing regulars to pay later when needed—something you won’t find at a typical grocery store.

When asked about the future, Kevin mentioned he’s planning to retire in three years at the age of 60, with dreams of traveling and spending more time with his wife Sandy, who is already retired and actively involved in the community. She used to bake for Moose Mart, and her Tourtière (French Canadian Meat Pie), especially during Christmas, is a hit, with 75 pies selling out almost instantly!

Kevin hopes that Moose Mart will continue to thrive. While the closure of the Kemptville College was a setback, he is looking forward to the proposed building of a new jail. Should it be built nearby, he believes it will bring in more business.  Kevin remains optimistic, always looking to better serve his customers and keep Moose Mart as a cornerstone of the Kemptville community.
